Alito Debate Ends; No Filibuster
So it looks as if this country will be obtaining an ignorant, ultra-conservative, women's rights stripping, constitution spitting, big business loving, Bush asskisser, Supreme Court judge. Final vote: 72-25.

Bush's Spreading Of Democracy Bites Him In The Ass!
The Hamas victory in the Palestinian parliamentary elections was a dream come true for some, but for other's it was just the opposite, a nightmare.
The militant Islamic group's overwhelming win, with the final vote count showing Hamas winning 74 of the 132 seats in the Legislative Council, while Fatah won 45. Hammas, running for the very first time, seems to have de-throned the governing party of Fatah from power.
All over the Arab world, Washington seems to be getting the blame for "radicalizing" the Palestinians. According to an article from Lebanon's Al-Bayan newspaper, the United States is largely to blame for the radicalization & frustration of the Palestinian people, & the fact that they have used the ballot box to choose the alternative, least appealing to Washington, Hamas. Al-Bayan said, " Such is the price to pay for democracy when the Muslim masses will vote for any party that identifies itself with Islam benefits from the favorable opinion mobilization." It added, " It should be noted that the Western world, with the United States at it's head, is very much responsible for the radicalization of Palestinian public opinion."
Israel's acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has said that peace talks were not possible "with a Palestinian administration if even part of it is an armed terrorist organization calling for the destruction of the state of Israel." Washington & the E.U. regard Hamas as a terrorist group & demand that it renounce violence & accept Israel's right to exist in return for offical contacts.
Iran has congratulated Hamas for it's election victory & praised voters for choosing "to continue the struggle & resistance against occupation." In a recent trip to Iran, Hamas political chief Khaled Meshaal said that his group would step up attacks against Israel if the Jewish state took military action against Iran over it's disputed nuclear program.
I'd have to agree with Al-Bayan and say that Washington is partly to blame for radicalizing the Palestinians, & driving them to vote for Hamas. I also find it rather humerous that Dumbya is trying to spread his 'democracy' all over the Arab world, yet failing miserably when the Arab people speak by VOTING for the most anti-Western group around. I don't think this is exactly what Georgie had in mind, but he only has himself to blame. I fear that Bush has bit off way more than he can chew. Invading Middle-East countries on lies, bombing many innocent citizens, & continuing to occupy Middle-East lands will only piss Arab's off. So don't act suprised when the Arab people take that anger & frustration right into the polling booth & vote for the most anti-American party out there! When you tease, poke, & prod a sleeping animal for too long, it loses it's patience-and BITES! And the fact that Iran is supporting the Hamas victory, & both are warning the U.S. & Israel, is quite freaky. I think that Bush may start WW3 before his pathetic term runs out!

Military Placing Homophobia Ahead of National Security
Originally the United States military said that 7 Arabic translaters and students were discharged under the policy, which allows gays and lesbians to serve as long as they do not disclose their sexual orientation.
But new figures from the Department of Defense by the center indicate that 20 linguists specializing in Arabic were discharged in that time frame, as well as 6 who spoke Farsi, the language spoken in Iran. Another 16 students studying Korean were also discharged under the "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
An additional 4 of the 59 students discharged from the Defense Language Institute were listed with "unknown" specialties and languages.
According to Aaron Belkin, director of the Center for the Study of Sexual Minorities in the Military, " We had a military language problem after 9/11 and we still have a language problem."
Steve Ralls, with Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, made a great point saying, " The military is placing homophobia well ahead of national security. It's rather appalling that in the weeks leading up to 9/11 messages were coming in, waiting to be translated...and at the same time they were firing people who could've done that job."
Belkin's research partner said, " It used to be this was seen as a gay rights issue, but now it's clearly a national security issue."
I couldn't agree more. This administration and military have put their homophobia before our country's national security in a critical time. Was it that the Republican controlled goverment/military couldn't deal with the fact that a gay person could have, and would have, saved this country's ass? You know how hard it must be to find an American who speaks Arabic or Farsi, especially in the U.S. military! And to discharge over 26 of them just because their gay is fucking asinine! What a disgrace this goverment has shown, to know that possibly some of those incoming messages overheard in Arabic, before, in, or around the time of 9/11 could have been adequatley translated by one of these gay men or women discharged, is totally horrifying!!!!
It's real nice to know that our goverment would rather take the risk, then let gay men and women Arabic translators do the very difficult job they are so good at. I'm appalled----are you?

Ladies, When 'Popping-A-Squat' Just Isn't Convenient...
The people at Comfort House http://comforthouse.com/comfort/porjah.html have introduced this lovely product called "The Feminal"! It's a portable urinal designed specifically for women. And look, just in case the awkward act of pulling down your pants & trying to hold that thing up to your nether-regions while relieving yourself in traffic on the 405 has left you feeling not so feminine--it comes in pretty purple!! The website states,
" Women, you can stop worring about finding a restroom when you travel with a portable urinal. You won't be forced to use dirty or deserted rest stops when nature calls at inconveinent times. Can be a real lifesaver if your stuck in traffic! The 'Feminal' is designed so that a woman can urinate in a reclined, seated, or standing position. When the 'Feminal' is gently pressed against the body, the unique shape creates a leak-proof seal. Includes cap. 4-cup capacity."
It sells for $ 12.95, or the dueling pissers special, 2 for $ 24.00!!
This kind of reminds me of the time my girlfriend & I took a road trip. Somewhere in the backwoods area of New Mexico, we stopped to get gas & look for a restroom. Off some dirt road we found a gas station in the middle of the night that was open. While pumping gas we noticed a few banjo-strummin' dudes in pickup trucks eyeing us like beef jerkey. Afraid to stay there any longer, we took off down the dirt road aways, pulling over so that I could Pop-A-Squat. While doing so, up the road coming at us was a vehicle. I tried to hurry, especially thinking that those scary dudes were a-comin' for us, but to no avail. Up pulls the vehicle, lights blinding my bare ass, to reveal a police trooper! They shined more lights on me, just in case I wasn't embarrassed enough, & asked , "Are you ladies alright?" Thankfully, they were very nice after I explained myself.
So I guess in a situation such as that, the 'Feminal' might have come in handy. But I think I'll still resort to the old Pop-A-Squat method. And if by chance I come across a nasty restroom facility, I'll just have to implement the craft women have mastered--hovering over the toliet like a UFO! I call this one, Pullin' a UFO. I.E., "Hey babe, this toliet's nasty, your gonna have to pull a UFO!"
I thought the funniest thing about this product on the Comfort House website was that it, "Includes Cap"! Like the cap was an extra gift from the makers! Oh, thanks so much! Now after I humiliate myself by pissing in a purple plastic jar while driving, it won't splash around all over myself or my car! Ingenius!
What will they think of next?
Christian School Expels Female Student For Kissing Girl, Off Campus!!
In court documents filed January 4th, attorneys for Covenant Christian Academy in Loganville say the school has a constitutional right to expel students for "sexual immorality".
Jessica Bradley filed a lawsuit, when the 9th grader was expelled from school last April. Bradley and her father filed a Gwinnett County Superior Court lawsuit in December, alleging invasion of privacy and breach of contract, seeking at least $ 1 million in damages.
A few days after the infamous sleepover (where were these kinds of sleepovers when I was in 9th grade?!:) ) Jessica and other girls were called into the principal's office. After being questioned for over an hour, she was expelled.
The school cited the school handbook when expelling Jessica. It states, " any behavior, on campus or away which indicates that a student has disregard for the spirit of the school standards, would be sufficient reason to ask for him/her to withdraw from Covenant Christian Academy."
This disgusts me. The 'sleepover' or 'kiss' were not on school campus, nor on school time--it is most definatley an invasion of privacy, and should be shot down. This is just the Christian schools way of getting rid of gay students, or anyone doing anthing remotley sexual. I hope Jessica Bradley ane her family sues the shit outta that school! 33rd Anniversary of Roe V. Wade
Today marks the 33rd anniversary of Roe V. Wade, a very important day for women. As we await the confirmation of Alito, a man determined to overturn this extremely important ruling, we need to remember the battles of the women before us and vow to fight tooth and nail to protect Roe.
The radical, religious Republicans have made it their goal to try and overturn Roe, trying to take women back to the days when we had no voice, and our bodies were the property of men and the state.
The Los Angeles Times has an article out today saying, "Taking direct aim at Roe V. Wade, lawmakers from several states are proposing broad restrictions on abortion, with the goal of forcing the U.S. Supreme Court- once it has a second new justice- to revisit the landmark ruling issued 33 years ago today."
" The bill under construction in Indiana would ban all abortions, except when continuing the pregnancy would threaten the woman's life or put her physical health in danger of "substantial permanent impairment". Similiar legislation is pending in Ohio, Georgia, and Tennessee."
So on this 33rd anniversary of Roe V. Wade, please remember to support women's rights to their own bodies.

Sappho's Book Club: February
"Rogue State: A Guide to the World's Only Superpower" By, William Blum
" The American Empire: To the American mind, these words sound like an oxymoron. Suggesting to Americans that their country has a compelling lust for political, economic, and military hegemony over the rest of the world, divorced from any moral considerations is akin to telling them of one's UFO abduction-except that they're more likely to believe the abduction story. William Blum has compiled evidence that will make believers of such skeptics. In 'Rogue State', he shows that "close encounters" between the United States and alien nations have demonstrably been of the cruelest kind--What has the U.S. done to the world that creates American-hating terrorists?"
This is the first book to be selected in' Sappho's Book Club'. At the end of February (date T.B.A.), all who read it can/will comment on it & engage in discussion. If you have a suggestion for a book to be featured, let me know. We can even vote on the next book, if wanted.
Sappho's Book Club: Like Oprah's, Only Better!!
Can't Find Bin Laden?
Osama Bin Laden has released yet another of his infamous audio recordings, which Al-Jazeera aired January 19th. Bin Laden's recent recording threatens new attacks on the United States, and also mentioned the book, "Rogue State: A Guide to the World's Only Superpower", By William Blum. I found this so interesting & amusing because just the other day I bought this book (before Bin Laden mentioned it) and have started reading it just last night! Blum's book was 205,763 on the Amazon.com list, but since Bin Laden plugged it, it has shot up to # 27!!! Blum, who is 72, has no regrets, " This is almost as good as being an Oprah book ." He added, " I was not turned off by the endorsement, I am not repulsed and I am not going to pretend I am." Good for him!
This also ties into my recent idea of starting the Sappho's Book Club, featuring a selected book, of my choosing, every month in which as many bloggers who wish, read the featured book and discuss/post/comment on it at the end of the month. I know it's a little early, but next months (Feb.) featured book will be of course, " Rogue State: A Guide to the World's Only Superpower" By, William Blum. Not only will we all better understand what Bin Laden refered to, but we will also engage in some much needed discussion, as well as probably piss off the goverment who I'm sure will now place Blum's book on the 'Do Not Read' list (ie:Do Not Fly list), and send the men in suits to question our "terrorist" reading material!!
We can all start reading it now, as I have, and towards the end of the month(Feb) (will announce date later) we can discuss it, just like Oprah...Only better! For now here is the link to Osama Bin Laden's recent audio recording, http://www.memritv.org/Transcript.asp?P1=1002

Letter From Disgruntled Iraqi Man To George W. Bush:
January 16th, 2006
Dear Mr. Bush,
Please accept my warmest greetings and appreciation for all the 'good things' your 'friendly and liberation' troops have done to my country.
In the nearly three years since 'the liberation', you and your troops have been leading us along the path of 'democracy and freedom' and have managed to bring security and stability to our land after decades of oppression.
And because I am so happy with what you have done for us I dreamed of you the other night. Your face beamed, and you kept smiling and you had an olive branch in your right hand.
You were surrounded by angels in the form of birds and looked as an upright, pious man with a Godly mission.
You said all your actions were driven by heavenly advice including your invasion of our country.
For this reason we thank God for all the suffering, grievances and calamities that have befallen us because of you since that, in your mind, is the wish of God.
Dear Mr. President,
Your deeds in Iraq are bearing fruit and your efforts have not gone in vain. 'The new Iraq' is a product of your persistence and perseverence.
And because of you and your deeds, 'democracy' is now deeply rooted in Iraq.
Because of you we have gained nothing and lost almost everything-may God bless you for it?
We now enjoy the privileges of your humanitarian experiences and because of that our country has returned to the pre-industrial age which your father had predicted for us.
Our country now has no drinking water, no electricity and no fuel. But what do we need these luxuries for at a time we are relishing the taste of 'the democracy' you have given us.
You may want to know that we are in a tunnel without light whose end will be the disintegration of our country into shaky statelets that will be easy to devour by others.
Congratulations Mr. President.
You gotta love his sarcastic writing style. You can find this letter at the Azzaman newspaper website at http://www.azzaman.com/english/print.asp?fname=opinion\2006-01-16\154.htm

Quote of the Day
Federal Lawsuits Filed Over Bush's Domestic Spying
The lawsuits were filed in federal court in New York by the Center for Constitutional Rights, and in Detroit by the American Civil Liberties Union.
The New York lawsuit was filed on behalf of the center & individuals & names Bush, the head of the National Security Agency, & the heads of the other major security agencies. The suit is challenging the NSA's surveillance of people within the U.S. without judicial approval or statutory authorization. It asked a judge to stop Bush & goverment agencies from conducting warrantless surveillance of communications in the U.S.
The Detroit lawsuit also names the NSA & was filed by the ACLU, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Greenpeace, & several individuals. This suit said the plaintiffs, who frequently communicate by phone & email with people in the Middle East & Asia, have a "well-founded belief" that their communications are being intercepted by the goverment.
In the New York suit, the Center for Constitutional Rights said it's work was directly affected by the surveillance because it's lawyers represent a potential class of hundreds of Muslim foreign nationals detained after 9/11. It said it's attorney-client privilege was likely violated as it represented many men detained without charge at Guantanamo Bay & a Canadian citizen picked up at a NY airport while changing planes, sent to Syria & tortured & detained without charges for nearly a year.
The group said the surveillance program has inhibited it's ability to represent clients vigorusly, making it hard to communicate via phone & email with overseas clients- in fear the conversations would be overheard. Although it will be difficult, in my opinion, to win any lawsuits stating they have a "well-founded belief" they are being spied upon without any real proof (although we all believe they probably are!), this argument about how it is affecting their ability to represent their clients to the fullest & making it difficult for them to communicate via phone & email in fear they are being overheard & compromised, stands ground.
I suspect that this is just the start of the lawsuits which will undoubtably be coming in as a response to the Bush administration's illegal attempt to spy on U.S. citizens, & rightfully so.

Bush Chases Tail, Once Again!
Although the majority of the major news organizations were claiming the U.S. had possibly found and killed Ayman Al-Zawahri, so far the reports are unfounded. But what the airstrike did kill were at least 17 people, including women and children.
Al-Zawahri had been invited to a dinner for a Muslim festival the night of the U.S. missle strike in a Pakistani border village, but never showed up. Instead he sent his aides, and investigators are still trying to determine who exactly was killed during the attack.
Not surprising, the people of Pakistan are pissed! Some 10,000 people protested in Karachi, Pakistan's largest city, chanting, "Death to America!", and " Stop bombing against innocent people!" Bush really knows how to spread the love, dosen't he?!
Pakistan does not allow American forces on it's soil to attack or hunt militants, and the Pakistani goverment condemned the attack and started a diplomatic protest, saying the U.S. had killed innocent civilians.
This is the second time this month that Pakistans Foreign Ministry complained about a U.S. attack on it's territory. The Foreign Ministry is protesting the attack by U.S. forces across the Afghan border, which killed 8 Pakistani's. Witnesses said U.S. forces in vehicles and helicopters crossed into Pakistan to carry out the attack.
Close one Bush, but NO cigar! Maybe you can borrow one of Clinton's?!

Same Shit, Different Asshole
Alito said he would have an "open mind" if faced with the question of abortion on the Supreme Court. Bullshit! Do you take women as fools, Alito? We know a bigot when we see and hear one.
Senator Richard Durbin (D) suggested otherwise with, " a mind that sadly is closed in some instances."
Alito would not use the term "settled law" when talking about abortion, although John Roberts did. Alito said the ruling "is an important precedent of the Supreme Court." Did he think we would miss that detail? Not when your dealing with the rights of millions of women Mr. Alito!
Then you have the issue of Alito unable to recall whether or not he had been a member of CAP, Concerned Alumni of Princeton, an organization that opposed the admission of women and minorities at Princeton University, his alma mater. Well, you listed your membership to CAP on your job application to the Reagan administration, dipshit!
Also a concern, his answers about whether he told the 3rd U.S.Circuit Court of Appeals that he should not be hearing cases involving investment company Vanguard. He holds six-figure investments with Vanguard.
Another subject, the Bill of Rights, Alito said that the Bill of Rights applies, "in times of war and in national crisis.", yet he declined to specify whether Bush acted properly in oredering wiretaps without warrants in selected cases as part of the "war on terror".
Upon reading some of my favorite blogs by women, I've noticed the same concern, as women should be about this- it concerns us greatly.
"Shakespeare's Sister at http://shakespearessister.blogspot.com said : " What kind of person holds so strong an opinion about keeping their own alma mater exclusivley white and male that they join an organization...and forgets they ever belonged? That's like my not remembering having been a member of GLABA or PB&J during college, why it just slipped my mind that I was a supporter of gay rights and peace! This guy's a schmuck. Or he has brain damage."
Shelly over at "Citizen Against Lies" at http://citizenagainstlies.blogspot.com said: "It's starting to sound like Alito is very much someone we dont want on the Supreme Court. He's ultra-conservative, a very big promotor of executive privledge, and that directly goes against the spirit of the Constitution and the spirit of the Founders. Alito should be stopped now before they can further rip the Constitution to shreds."
And "Tennessee Guerilla Women" at http://guerillawomentn.blogspot.com wrote: " Remarkably, Alito defended his draconian opinion holding that women must notify husbands before obtaining an abortion. Anyone who thinks this guy is mainstream needs to look at his 19th Century view on the State's right to mandate old-time wifely duties."
Amen sisters! I think the American citizens should be the deciding vote on Supreme Court nominees, they will, after all, be deciding the fate of many individual citizens.

Bush Threatens Iran About Developing Nuclear Weapons; Ironic,Considering The CIA Gave Them The Blueprints To Do So
But something the Bush administration has left out in telling us is that both the U.S. & the U.K have supplied Iran with the materials & know how to build a nuclear bomb.
And with the news this weekend of Iranian intentions to resume nuclear fuel research despite international appeals not to do so, why is the U.S. & the U.K. suprised?
Heres a brief history of how Iran's nuclear proliferation began:
The 1953 CIA ouster of President Mossadegh, a leader who was conforming to westernized policy yet made the mistake of asking to keep a small portion of his country's oil revenue, was achieved by staged bombings & shootings which were blamed on the Iranian goverment in order to piss off the population & enable a coup.
After installing the Shah Globalists like Henry Kissinger, that opened the door for Iran to develop sophisticated nuclear energy programs. 23 reactors were built with the help of American corporations such as General Electric & Westinghouse.
In 1976, Pres. Gerald Ford authorized the Shah to buy & operate a plutonium extracting & processing facility-a big step toward converting energy processing to weapons making.
After the 1979 revolution, Ayatollah Khomeni reversed westernized policy, yet maintained Iran's nuclear interests.
Then comes the doozy...
A CIA operation code named "Merlin", enabled a Russian nuclear engineer paid by the CIA $5,000 per month, as well as the arrangment to become an american citizen, to deliver nuclear blueprints to the Iranian's. He was to pose as an unemployed & greedy scientist who was willing to sell his soul & the secrets of the atomic bomb to the highest bidder. The CIA told him to get the blueprints to the Iranian's. They would quckly recognize their value & rush them back to their superiors in Tehran.
The Russian was obviously apprehensive, so the CIA downplayed the operation, telling him that it was just an intelligence gathering effort, not an illegal attempt to give Iran the bomb. He was told the Iranians already possessed the technology he was to be handing over to them.
The truth was the CIA knew nothing about Iran's nuclear know how due to an earlier espionage disaster where info concerning all CIA operatives in Iran were leaked to Iran. As a result, many were arrested, & the rest either pulled out or are still missing.
The idea behing "Merlin" was to give Iranians flawed nuclear blueprints to set back their weapons program & help the CIA monitor the paths they took. But the Russian agent did not know this & was kept in the dark.
Upon reviewing the blueprints he immediatley noticed the flaw & decided to give the Iranians a note of his own pointing out the flaw. He thought he was doing the right thing in order to successfully carry out his mission. He thought the flaw was so obvious that the Iranians would smell a rat.
In fact, during a break from a meeting the CIA case officer took the CIA senior officer aside & said," He wasnt supposed to know that, he wasnt suppossed to find a flaw." The senior officer told him not to worry, that " It didnt matter."
After the trip, the CIA officer handed the Russian agent a sealed envelope with the blueprints inside. He was told not to open the envelope under any circumstances. Just to deliver it to the Iranians & get away quick, safe & alive. But the Russian agent had his own ideas. The CIA discovered that a high ranking Iranian official would be in Vienna, so they sent the Russian there. In Vienna, the Russian opened the envelope & included his personal letter to the Iranians. He felt if he didnt mention the flaws, the Iranians would never trust or deal with him again.
He dropped the envelope off at the P.M. of Iran's apartment building, slipping it through the door without having to talk to anyone. He flew back to the U.S. . Shortly after the Russian dropped off the envelope, the National Security Agency reported that an Iranian official in Vienna abruptly changed his schedule & flew back to Iran. So the blueprints were now in Iran.
What the CIA didnt know was that Iran already had workable blueprints from a Pakistani scientist & they were able to compare the designs obtained from the CIA. Nuclear experts say that they would have been able to extract valuable information from the blueprints while ignoring the flaws.
With blueprints in hand, the Iranian weapons program was further forwarded by exports of radioactive material from the U.K. which could be used as part of a nuclear weapons program. The London Observer reported that a truck carrying 1000kg of zirconium silicate from a British firm (zirconium metal can be extracted from the substance to be used to prevent fuel rods corroding in nuclear reactors & as part of a nuclear warhead) traveled unchecked from Britain through Germany & Romaina & continued to Tehran, Iran.
So fast forward to today. It seems almost inevitable now that the NeoCons will launch targeted military strikes against Iran's nuclear facilities. Will Israel go along? Well, former Israel P.M. Netanyahu has hinted he would consider a pre-emptive air strike against Iran's nuclear facilities if he were re-elected. And with Ariel Sharon now out of the picture, Netanyahu has a better chance to become P.M. of Israel. Then you got fundamentalist Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad firing back threats to wipe "Israel off the map", it seems hard not to see where all this is headed.
Then we got the members of The Project for a New American Century (Cheney, Jeb Bush, Dan Quayle, Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, etc, etc) calling not only for a war against Iraq in 2000, but calling for a follow up on Iran. The PNAC outlines a roadmap of conquest. It calls for the "direct imposition of U.S. forward bases" throughour Central Asia & the Middle East, with Iran topping that list. We also have the Pentagon's "New Map", a vision of endless war that will incorporate the "gap", the 3rd World States, into the "core" of globalized powers. The map begins with the domination & assimliation of the middle east "rogue states".
Former UN Weapons Inspector Scott Ritter has gone on record several times suggesting war with Iran is next on the agenda.
American Consrvative magazine reported that Dick Cheney had given the authorization for a military strike in Iran immediatley after the next terror attack in the U.S.
Newt Gingrich has called for a regime change in Iran.
Just recently the so-called P5-Britain, France, U.S., Russia, & China-have sent seperate notes to Iran in recent days over it's plans to resume research on nuclear fuel.
Condoleeza Rice has said it's a matter of time before Iran is referred to the council & Washington feels it has enough support for tough action.
Well folks, if this dosen't freak you out, you might want to feel yourself for a pulse. The United States goverment is in the works to go after Iran if they do not cease all forms of nuclear research. This could very well start a new World War. Who knows what weapons Iran has developed (thanks to the CIA), & if the U.S. attacks Iran, they will fight back with whatever is in their arsenal. They dont want to become the next Iraq.
We're being set up. We are being set up for the next World War with a nasty fight that could very well involve nuclear weapons. Bush The Destroyer is dragging us down a violent road we are not willing to go down- but that dosent matter. The 'Commander in Chief' feels he can do & get away with anything he wants. Bush has become the dictator he has always wanted to be. IMPEACH him before it's too late.

R.I.P. Comandante Ramona
Comandante Ramona, the first Zapatista rebel to appear publicly in Mexico City after a brief uprising in 1994, died on the way to the hospital in the southern state of Chiapas, Mexico, said Marcos, Zapatista leader, on Friday.
Ramona, who always wore a black ski mask worn by the Zapatista leaders, was one of the main promoters of womens rights in the rebel group. She won the hearts of many after the media showed her fellow Zapatista commanders towering above her during her 1st round of peace talks with the goverment in 1994.
Ramona recieved a kidney transplant from her brother in 1996, which was paid for by supporters who sent in cash after an internet campaign.
Marcos told supporters during a speech in Chiapas, " Mexico has lost one of those fighters that matter, and a piece of our hearts has been ripped out."
Marcos put his nationwide tour that seeks more support for Indians & the poor before July's presidential election on hold to attend Ramona's funeral in the rebel stronghold of Oventic.
Ramona was a very important member of the ELZN, as shown by the Ramona dolls complete with rifle & ski mask made by the indigenous of Chiapas & popular with tourists visiting Chiapas.
May you rest in peace Ramona, & know many will continue your fight for women's rights, as well as the equal rights of the beautiful, indigenous people of Mexico, & around the world. You will be missed, but never forgotten.
Tom De-Slayed/Democrats Expected To Win Control Of House!
Elections are expected to be held when lawmakers return to Capitol Hill the week of January 31st. Democrats must gain 15 seats in Novemember to win control of the 435 member House. And if Abramoff sings, which he will, there are expected to be at least that amount going down as well. So it looks as if this Republican scandal may allow the Democrats to take control of the House.
Delay said, " During my time in Congress, I have always acted in an ethical manner within the rules of our body and the laws of our land."
Yeah, sure buddy! You reak of corruption. As does the rest of your Republican party. Now sit down, shut up, and allow the Democrats to take over and clean up your dirty, shitty mess!

The Iraq Elections: Will The U.S. Get Their 'Puppet Goverment'?
Despite a UN observer's endorsement of the December 15th vote, the International Mission for Iraqi Elections will send a team of assessors to Iraq.
The UN observer, Craig Jenness, said that his team found the elections to be credible. His team helped the Iraqi election commission organize & oversee the poll, which gave the Shia religious bloc a big lead in preliminary returns. Sunni Arabs & secular Shias have rejected Jenness' findings, saying their concerns for political assassinations, among others, were not addressed.
Upon reading a few blogs written by Iraqi's in Iraq, I have found that the Iraqi's are disappointed, angry, and have lost hope in regards to the election results so far.
Dayez, from "Iraqi Rebel" http://iraqirebel.blogspot.com said 5 days after the election: " Can somebody tell me what the hell just happened? I seriously feel that someone hit me hard in the head with an aluminum baseball bat." "How can it be?" "It just dosen't add up. It defies logic and reason. No way Iraqi's are such brainwashed fools." "What about the truckloads of ballots that entered from Iran? Where did they end up? How did they get ahold of the ballots? Who the hell is running the Independent Electoral Commission? Iraqis? Americans or Iranians?"
He added, " If this is democracy then I spit and shit on democracy. Congratulations everyone. I congratulate everyone who participated and cheerleaded this farce, including myself." "Now we are stuck with the mullahs for 4 FUCKING YEARS. Who knows what the hell would happen after that. We might as well do away with elections altogether and the Sayyid-may Allah bless him-would just give us his opinion instead of sheep going to vote under his direction."
The blog, "A Family in Baghdad", had this to say about the then upcoming elections: " A couple of days ago, some friends from a southern governorate in Iraq visited us and we talked extendedly about the current situation and our prediction for the coming election and the future. Unfortunately, I found them depressed and they dont see any hope in the approaching election. America will force whoever they want, so what is the use of voting? America came with it's army to take over the oil wells. Even if America withdraws half of their soldiers, it will keep military bases in Iraq...I laughed and said, Thank GOD that we all agree on understanding the objective and intentions of the American occupation in Iraq. They said, Um Raed, now everybody knows...I said again: Thank GOD, then we want something and America does not want to leave Iraq and it will keep dodge and dodge...but we are going to stop trying to push them to leave? Do we be negative and just watch? They said: Of course not, but we only hope for change after the coming goverment expires. This means after 4 years...I just laughed and said: I will vote in this election, and there will be a small hope that better leaders will come forward for the Iraqi's...
We all know that America will withdraq part of it's army and will keep part in their bases...It's partners will come in the second phase of occupation to invade Iraq's economy and gear it towards the desire and interest of American companies. We all know this movie and it's details. We saw it before...
But we want to live this experience to make armies and companies leave Iraq..
We want no short of a full independence..."
These are not stupid people. The United States goverment is continuously insulting the Iraqi people's intelligence by trying to pull the wool over their eye's, by teasing them & allowing them an election- when actually the U.S./Bush regime are setting up a puppet goverment that will not represent ordinary Iraqi's.
The U.S. tried, in many ways, to prevent elections in Iraq. Finally, they were compelled to accept the elections by a huge non-violent resistence. Bush and Blair had to agree to the elections, the following step was to subvert them.
Noam Chomsky made a great point, saying, " Elections mean you pay some attention to the will of the population. Well, the crucial question for an invading army is: 'Do they want us to be there?' '". We all know the answer to that. Of course they dont. The British Ministry of Defense had a poll a few months ago that was leaked to the British press, and it found that 82% of the Iraqi population wanted the coalition forces to leave. Only 1% of the population said that they were increasing security.
What the United States occupying powers are doing now in Iraq is familiar. We have a history of this in Central America. The U.S.-run state terrorist forces are the military, the civilians are the local forces, and the United States is in the background. If anything goes wrong, they move in. Just like the Japanese in South Korea, or the British in India.
The United States is setting up a puppet goverment in Iraq, and doing everything they can to prevent a sovereign, democratic Iraq. The reason being, and it has nothing to do with WMD's or terrorist threats, is that Iraq has huge oil resources that are mostly untapped. All of that is right smack in the middle of the main energy-producing region in the world. Taking control of Iraq will greatly strengthen the United States control over the major energy resources of the world. It will give the U.S. very critical leverage over our competitors, which are Asia & Europe. It also helped that Iraq was completely defenseless.
The U.S. wants Iraq to have independent states with weak goverments that have to rely on the imperial power for their survival.
The amazing thing is, the occupation of Iraq is failing miserably. Even though Iraq is a country that has been devastated by wars, was ran by an evil tyrant, and suffered a decade of murderous sanctions that killed hundreds of thousands of people, the U.S. military occupation can not get the country under control, nor can it get any support from outside the resistance. The U.S. occupation has not even been able to get the electricity working in Iraq!
The U.S. does not want an independent Iraq. The reason being, if in a Shi'ite majority, they would have a lot of influence in policy. The Shi'ites in the south, where most of the oil is, would probably prefer good relations with Iran over hostility with them. The Badr brigade mostly controls the south, and they were trained in Iran. The clerics have long lasting relations with Iran as well. They would probably move towards a Shi'ite alliance with Iraq & Iran. Also remember that across the border is Saudi Arabia, where there's a big Shi'ite population that's bitter about being oppressed by the U.S.-backed tyranny. So the Shi'ite alliance would end up controlling most of the world's oil, independent of the U.S. Then the U.S. would have to start to worry about them hooking up with the East, such as China. China is not afraid nor intimidated by the U.S. China is already establishing some relations with Iran, possibly Saudi Arabia-both economic, as well as military. This would be a total nightmare for Washington. So the U.S. will fight like hell, and never leave Iraq- in order to avoid or prevent that from ever happening.
Economically this is going on too. The U.S. keeps insisting on keeping Saddam Hussein's anti-labour laws, but the labour movement isn't going for it. The U.S came in & immediately tried to open up the economy to foreign takeover by imposing crazy, illegal laws for privatisation. Iraqi's do not want that. They want to take control of their own economy, and rightly so.
So the U.S. goverment/Bush administration had a so-called terrific plan in the works for a long time to achieve oil power in Iraq by invading them. What they needed to do was have a good excuse to do so. The Sept 11th attacks fell right into their laps, how conveinent huh? "Eureka", says Bush! They concoct the weapons of mass destruction bullshit lie, and hope America takes the bait. And like sheep to the slaughter, they do. But not all.... We will not be fooled.

Pentagon Orders Soldiers To Promote Iraq War
The intial reports back to the Pentagon show the operation a success with dozens of front page stories in newspapers around the country.
One military reservist gave his hometown paper an interview, & when pressed by the paper on whether or not his commanding officers told him to talk to the press, he admitted he was "encouraged" to do so.
Another reservist who asked not to be identified for obvious reasons said, " I've been promised an early release if I do a good job promoting the war."
In interviews with reservists home for the holidays, a pattern has emerged on the Pentagon's propaganda effort. Soldiers are encouraged to contact their local news media outlets to offer interviews about the war. The Pentagon has a detailed set of talking points for them, encouraging the soldiers to:
--Admit initial doubts about the war, but claim conversion to a belief in the American mission;
--Praise military leadership in Iraq & throw in a few words of support for the Bush administration;
--Talk about how " things are better" now in Iraq;
--Claim the mission to turn security of the country over to the Iraqi's is working;
--Reiterate that America must not abandon it's mission & must stay until the "job is finished"
"My worry is that we have the right military strategy and political strategies now but the patience of the American public is wearing thin", Captain David Diaz told the Roanoke Times.
"It's way better now (inIraq). People are friendlier. They seem more relaxed, and they say 'Thank you, mister'", Sgt. Christopher Desierto told his hometown paper, The Maui Times.
It seems that soldiers who are home, but don't have to return to Iraq, are singing a differernt tune. Sgt. Major Floyd Dubose said, " I've just been focused on trying to get the rest of my guys home."
Specialist Leonard Clark was demoted to private & fined $1,640 for posting anti-war statements on his blog. His last entry before his blog was shut down, told how his fellow soldiers were becoming increasingly opposed to the U.S. operation in Iraq.
One reservist home for the holidays said, " The message is clear, if you want to get out of this man's Army with an honorable (discharge) and full benefits you better not tell the truth about what is happening in-country."
Sgt. Johnathan Wilson, a reservist, has already recieved his honorable discharge after he returned home earlier this month, so he's not afraid to talk on the record. He said, " Iraq is a classic FUBAR. The country is out of control and we can't stop it. Anybody who tries to sell a good news story about the war is blowing it out his ass. We don't win and eventually we will leave the country in an worse shape than it was when we invaded."
I find it rather pathetic the Pentagon & U.S. goverment have to order U.S. soldiers to falsely tell a make-believe glory story to American media. You obviously know it's going bad when they have to result to these pathetic propaganda tactics. Some soldiers are even being "promised" early releases if they promote the war!
I salute the brave soldiers who have the balls to tell the American people the REAL Iraq war story. Those are the real heroes.
After PRI lost power to Vicente Fox when he was elected president in 2000, the rebels focused on building a network of Zapatista-run schools, & medical clinics in dozens of Indian villages in Chiapas, Mexico.
Today, the Zapatista's are emerging from their jungle hideouts to embark on a 6 month campaign tour of the country designed to be an alternative to this year's already contentious presidential race. It is set to coincide with the anniversary of uprising on 1/1/94. This time though, the Zapatista's are not expected to carry weapons or declare war when they march into San Cristobal.
Subcomandante Marcos has said that he will build a nationalist leftist movement that will "shake this country up from below" during visits to Mexico's 31 states.
Marcos has promised that the movement will be non-violent, saying that he will no longer be a military" subcommander", but a civilian known as "Delegate Zero".
The national tour, which they have dubbed, "Other Campaign", in reference to the presidential elections in July, is the 3rd phase in the Zapatista revolution. The Zapatista command council said, " A step forward in the struggle is only possible if we unite with other sections of society. We have to unite with labourers, teachers, students and all the workers in the city and countryside."
I wish the Zapatista's luck, as well as safety, on their tour of Mexico. The way the Zapatista's have stood up for their right's, as well as others right's, is an inspiration to us all.
