Immigration Protests Could Be Spark That Ignites Larger Movement Against Bush, etc

From: Mexico's ' La Jornada' -3/26/06

" The indignation provoked by the Sensenbrenner Law (H.R. 4437), which criminalizes immigration, has generated a national movement in the United States. In recent weeks, over 2 million people have taken to the streets demanding a just immigration reform. Saturday, March 25th half a million people marched in Los Angeles and 500,000 more in 14 other American cities condemned the racist and xenophobic measure. These demonsrations remind one of the events defending civil rights in that country in the 1960's, and as was seen before, such a movement could generate a great wave of opposition in the United States. One mustn't forget that the goverment of George W. Bush has provoked great discontent within the population, in particular for the invasion of Iraq and the incompetence it showed after the catastrophe caused by Hurricane Katrina.
After the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, in 2001, the criminalization of immigration has become a characteristic of immigration politics in the United States. Authorities there have substantially increased the number of border patrol guards and have installed sophisticated equipment to detect people that cross the frontier. Even so, the migratory influx into that country has continued to increase.
According to official estimates, the number of undocumented people grew from 8.4 million in 2000 to 12 million today. But these numbers, which demonstrate the failure of this kind of control, mean nothing to the authorities, and the initatives that they will discuss in Congress this week continue along the same course followed since the attacks, giving priority to security over any other consideration, including humanitarian ones.
The reform measure written by Republican Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner, for example, contemplates building a wall on the border with Mexico and penalizing anyone who helps undocumented people. For their part, Senator's John Cornyn and Jon Kyl, of the same party (Republican), will present a project that would augment vigilance along the border and facilitate guest worker visas for the undocumented.
Truly, the restrictive proposals explain the reaction of the immigrant community, documented and undocumented. But the size and scope of the movement has been surprising. The strength of this conglomerate is such that its marches have surpassed the expectations of their organizers. For the Coalition for Political Rights Abroad, these demonstrations are an example of "the migrant community, documented and undocumented, who are every daily more aware of their rights and, stemming from the discriminatory measures which different sectors wish to impose, has finally learned how to apply pressure against the authorities and groups in power."
The movement of support for the migrants has united Mexicans, Irish and Poles, among other nationalities, and has brought together activists, religious leaders, media personalities, and important politicians. The Mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio Villaraigosa, stood with the demonstrators. The Governer of Illinois, Rob Blagojevich, also participated in the protests and said that " the work of migrants is what has made Illinois and the United States great. The country needs to remember their contribution and efforts by keeping their families united."
These events may even mark a resurgence of the civil rights movement, which up to now has been lethargic and humiliated. Moving beyond the strickly defined theme of immigration, the protests seen these past few days could spark a much wider movement. After all, Americans have lots of reasons to march against the Bush Goverment. For this reason, the actions of the migrant community may pull civil society in the United States back together."

Minutemen Retreat!!

From: L.A. Indymedia

Jim Gilchrist & his Minutemen proved that they can retreat from battle on a minute's notice by withdrawing Friday night from the front lines of Costa Mesa, California's immigration war started by Minutemen Mayor, Allan Mansoor.

The pullout follows a surge of immigrant organizing across the country that led to massive strikes by high school students & more than a half-million immigrants & supporters protesting in Los Angeles in solidarity with tens of thousands of others across the country.

Gilchrist & a handful of supporters arrived on 2 previous Friday's in front of El Chinaco restaurant to protest it's owner, city council candidate Mirna Burciaga, for opposing local police as Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents & to retaliate for weekly protests occuring in front of City Council member Gary Monahan's beer bar, a popular Minuteman outpost.

Gilchrist fired off an email accusing Burciaga of being a "racial supremacist" & a member of "racist groups". No proof of that was offered, but in a flyer Gilchrist cast his own racist net over all undocumented immigrants:

"Does Mirna Burciaga envision Costa Mesa as a criminal haven sanctuary city, infested with drug dealers, murderers, child molesters, robbers, and rapists wandering freely without any interference from law enforcement?"

Gilchirst urged followers to bring bright flashlights to El Chinaco "to flash in the faces of the adversaries when they approach."

Armed with a Mag flashlight outside of El Chinaco, Gilchrist said that his band of border patrolling baby boomers would protest there every Friday "until she (Burciaga) orders her operatives to stop harassing Monohan." But Burciaga is not involved with the Monahan protests, which are organized by a community group called the Colectivo Tonantzin.

But last Friday the Minuteman brigade couldn't be found, at least not at Chinaco's, which offered the $ 1 "minuteman" taco that increased business during Gilchrist's St. Patricks Day appearance.

The only Minuteman found was at Monahan's, holding out against 50 noisy protesters marching & debating immigration law with customers. Offending customers & protesters alike, he singly defended the Minuteman creed, speaking without benefit of militia or musket & with only a single Guinness to fire up his patriotic blood, but with the power of 3 six packs of Guinness flowing through his veins & a flask full of dry powder loaded up his muzzle.

He gave me the middle finger as I videotaped, then pleaded with me to "talk American" with him.

"Does anyone speak English," he asked the crowd.

In Hebrew, I answered "Ani medabaer evreet", which means "I speak Hebrew." He ignored me, perhaps because he thought I was speaking Spanish.

Some of Monahan's regular beer drinking clients claim that the weekly protests have increased business-pointing for proof to the influx of Minutemen who have come to drink since the protests began.

But a nearly equal number of clients have walked away for Monahan's bar after learning from protesters about his anti-immigrant political agenda. Others have observed driving off after seeing Minutemen counter demonstrators in the bar's main driveway. And turnout for the Monahan protests has generally increased, while Minuteman counter-demonstrations, marked by Gilchrist's rude but hilarious antics, have steadily declined.

As immigrant rights protests surge, the Colectivo has grown through grassroots organizing. It has regular meetings in Costa Mesa's immigrant community & held 2 fruitful community forums on immigrants rights, including one attended by Gilchrist. It also sent a 3 bus caravan of protesters to the L.A. rally.

Growing protests will cut Monahan's profits, & combined with other efforts, will help change the local political landscape before the next election when Mansoor is expected to run again * Monahan will be termed out.

Very little organized suport for ICE has come from within the city. Even when Minutemen contingents show up in force at city council meetings most of them are from outside of Costa Mesa. At the last council meeting, for example, 21 people spoke in favor of ICE, but only 7 of them said they lived in Costa Mesa.

Minutemen also have a hard time gathering members for their regular protest raids on day labor sites, where they harass employers & workers. Often far outnumberd by counter demonstrators, their protest power peaked last summer when, joined in Laguna Beach by white supremacist groups waving swastika banners & confederate flags, their numbers reached in the 40's at most.

Increasingly unwelcome in Orange County, Gilchrist's Minuteman members were recently banned from a Laguna Beach parade & denied entry into another parade in San Juan Capistrano. Even Orange County Republican party heads, who have adopted the Minutemen agenda as their own, & who are reportedly grooming Mansoor for party ascendancy, want nothing to do with insurgent Gilchrist, who they see as an annoying & unstable amateur standing in their way.

For the moment, however, the Minuteman agenda is determining Costa Mesa's future.

I despise the Minutemen & everything they stand for. To me, they are just a bunch of old ass, white nazi men/women with nothing better to do with their retirement time than stand "guard" at the US/Mexico border twiddling their thumbs, waiting for an immigrant to cross the border, then what? They accuse all who cross the border in search of a better life & work, with being "rapists", "robbers", "child molesters", etc, etc. The only time you see a significant number of them is when the Orange County Skinheads & other filth rise up to the surface to join their little "brigade" of retired racists. Being born in Orange County, I am fully aware of their types, & have come across them several times years ago. Believe me when I say that these racist pigs are unintelligent, with nothing but hateful, vulgar words to offer-instead of thoughtful, intelligent debate/conversation. If any of my readers live in or near the Orange County area of California, please help the Minutemen continue their cowardly retreat by joining in the rally/protests against these racists either at Monahan's bar (Minuteman infested bar), or anywhere else these pigs show their faces.

I have also heard rumors of a 'Mexican Flag Burning Ceremony' on April 1st at 10am in Laguna Beach, California at the north end of Victoria Beach in Laguna. Not 100% sure if this will still occur, due to the racists being outnumbered lately, but come out to counter this disgusting, racist act!!

Down With H.R. 4437!!

Los Angeles protest against H.R. 4437, March 25-26th 2006

Los Angeles Protest Against H.R.4437

This past weeked more than half a million people protested in the streets of Los Angeles, and neighboring cities, against the disgusting, racist H.R.4437 bill. This not only served as a sign of hope to many, that this amount of people can peacefully come together for a common cause/goal, but it also needs to serve as a warning-- the goverment should not attempt to piss off people who are willing and able to organize so well, and in such large numbers.

Anti-Empire Report--Courtesy Of William Blum:

In an email sent to me by the amazing author of "Rogue State", William Blum, he made some great points , as well as some advice for us 'Liberal's'--all which were spot-on & that I wish to relay to my readers here...

March 22nd, 2006

" I'm often told by readers of their encounters with Americans who support the outrages of US foreign policy no matter what facts are presented to them, no matter what arguments are made, no matter how much the goverment's statements are shown to be false. If these Americans have no other defense of the policies they will declare how glad they are that the United States rules and polices the world; better America than someone else. They include amongst their number those who still believe that Iraq had a direct involvement in the events of September 11th, that Saddam Hussein had close ties to al-Qaeda, and/or that weapons of mass destruction were indeed found in Iraq after the 2003 invasion.
My advice is to forget such people. They would support such outrages even if the goverment came to their homes, seized their first born, and hauled them away screaming, as long as the goverment assured them it was essential to fighting terrorism (or communism). My (very) rough guess is that they constitute no more than 15 percent of the population. I suggest that we concentrate on the rest, who are reachable.
Inasmuch as I can not see violent revolution succeeding in the United States (something deep inside tells me that we couldn't quite match the goverment's firepower, not to mention their viciousness), I can offer no solution to stopping the imperial monster other than increasing the number of those in the opposition until it reaches a critical mass; at which point...I can't predict the form the explosion will take.
So I'm speaking here of education, and in my writing and in my public talks I like to emphasize certain points which try to deal with the underlying intellectual misconceptions and emotional "hangups" I think Americans have which stand in the way of their seeing through the bullshit; this education can also take the form of demonstrations or acts of civil disobedience, whatever might cause a thaw in a frozen mind. Briefly, here are the main points:
(1) US foreign policy does not "mean well". It's not that American leaders have miscalculated, or blundered, causing great suffering, as in Iraq, while having noble intentions. Rather, while pursuing their imperial goals they simply do not care about the welfare of the foreign peoples who are on the receiving end of the bombing and the torture, and we should not let them get away with claiming such intentions.
(2) The United States is not concerned with this thing called "democracy", no matter how many times George W. uses the word each time he opens his mouth. In the past 60 years, the US has attempted to overthrow literally dozens of democratically-elected goverments, sometimes successfully, sometimes not, and grossly interfered in as many democratic elections in every corner of the world. The question is: What do the Busheviks mean by "democracy"? The last thing they have in mind is any kind of economic democracy, the closing of the gap between the desperate poor and those for whom too much is not enough. The first thing they have in mind is making sure the target country has the political, financial and legal mechanisms in place to make it hospitable to globalization.
(3) Anti-American terrorists are not motivated by hatred or envy of freedom or democracy, or by American wealth, secular goverment, or culture. They are motivated by decades of awful things done to their homelands by US foreign policy. It works the same all over the world. In the period of the 1950's to the 1980's in Latin America, in response to a long string of Washington's dreadful policies, there were countless acts of terrorism against US diplomatic and military targets as well as the offices of US corporations. The US bombing, invasion, occupation and torture in Iraq and Afghanistan have created thousands of new anti-American terrorists. We'll be hearing from them for a terribly long time.
(4) The United States is not actually against terrorism per se, only those terrorists who are not allies of the empire. There is a lengthy and infamous history of support for numerous anti-Castro terrorists, even when their terrorist acts were committed in the United States. At this moment, Luis Posada Carriles remains protected by the US goverment, though he masterminded the blowing up of a Cuban airplane that killed 73 people and his extradition has been requested by Venezuela. He's but one of hundreds of anti-Castro terrorists who've been given haven in the United States over the years. The United States has known connections to al-Qaeda, to further foreign policy goals more important than fighting terrorism.
(5) Iraq was not any kind of a threat to the United States. Of the never-ending lies concerning Iraq, this is the most insidious, the necessary foundation for all the other lies. This is the supposed justification for the preemptive invasion, for what the Nuremberg Tribunal called a war of aggression. Abscent such a threat, it didn't matter if Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, it didn't matter if the intelligence was right or wrong about this or that, or whether the Democrats also believed the lies. All that mattered was the Bush administration's claim that Iraq was an imminent threat to wreak some kind of great havoc upon America. But think about that. What possible reason could Saddam Hussein have had for attacking the United States other than an irresistible desire for mass national suicide?
(6) There was never any such animal as the International Communist Conspiracy. There were, as there still are, people living in misery, rising up in protest against their condition, against a oppressive goverment, a goverment usually supported by the United States.
(7) Conservatives, particularly of the neo-kind (far to the right on the political spectrum), and liberals (ever so slightly to the left of center) are not ideological polar opposites. Thus, watching a TV talk show on foreign policy with a conservative and a liberal is not "balanced"; a more appropriate balance to a conservative would be a left-wing radical or progressive. American liberals are typically closer to conservatives on foreign policy than they are to these groupings on the left, and the educational value of such "balanced" media can be more harmful than beneficial as far as seeing through the empire's motives and actions."

How to be (duh) happy:
" Renowned conservative writer George Will penned a column last month celebrating the fact that a survey showed that conservatives were happier than liberals or moderates. While 34 percent of all Americans call themselves "very happy", only 28 percent of liberal Democrats (and 31 percent of moderate or conservative Democrats) do, compared with 47 percent of conservative Republicans. Will asserted that the explanation for these poll results lies in the fact that conservatives are more pessimistic and less angry than liberals."

--Sappho's personal thought: Of course conservative Republicans are more "happy"..they roll around in their money all day with their blinders on, ignoring any & all problems the world is having. IGNORANCE IS BLISS!

" I would propose that one important reason conservatives may be happier is that their social conscience extends no farther than themselves and their immediate circle of friends or family. George Will gives not the slightest hint that the sad state of the world affects, or should affect, conservatives' happiness. In my own case, if my happiness were based soley on the objective conditions of my particular life--work, social relations, health, adventure, material comfort, etc--I could, without hesitation, say that I'm very happy. But I'm blessed/cursed with a social conscience that assails my tranquility. Reading the hundred varieties of daily horrors in my morning newspaper--the cruelty of man, the cruelty of nature, the cruelty of chance--I'm frozen in despair and anger. Often, what makes it hardest to take is that my own goverment, at home and abroad, directly and indirectly, is responsible for more of the misery than any other human agent. I would have been incredulous, during the first half of my life, to think that one day my own goverment would scare me so. But if I were a conservative, I could take great comfort, even happiness, in convincing myself that it's largely "the bad guys" who are being hurt and that all these horrors are for the purpose of extending democracy, freedom, and other joys to the dark corners of the world. And at a profit."

Chavez Throws Bush The Oil Curveball

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez defended Iran's nuclear program today, saying that Washington's firm opposition to Tehran & the invasion of Iraq both resulted from America's insatiable thirst for oil.
Chavez said, " You know that one of the most serious problems the world has today is the energy problem, so much that the North American empire has invaded Iraq just to look for oil and now threatens Iran because of oil. It's an excuse by the empire, looking for energy."
He added, " I'm completely sure that it's absolutely false that the Iranian goverment is developing an atomic bomb. It's the United States that has atomic bombs."
Chavez's comments came on the heels of another speech he made Monday night where he warned that if US troops were to invade any Latin American country, "revolutionaries" from across the region would join forces to battle the Americans.
Dang! Boy dosen't hold back! I like that!

Serpentine

The following is an excerpt from Ani DiFranco's song called "Serpentine":

" Yes, the goons have gone global

and the CEO's are shredding files

and the democrins and the republicrats

are flashing their toothy smiles

and uncle tom is posing for a photo op

with the oval office clan

and uncle sam is rigging cockfights

in the promised land

and that knife you stuck in my back is still there

it pinches a little when I sigh and moan

and these days I'm thinkin I could just as soon use

the time alone.

Cuz all the wrong people have the power

of suggestion

and the freedom of the press is meaningless

if nobody asks a question

I mean, causation by definition

is such a complex compilation of factors

that to even try to say why is to oversimplify

but that's a far cry, isn't it dear?

from acting like you're the only one there

unrepentantly self-centered and unfair.

Enter all suckers scrambling for the scoop

exit Mr. Eye Contact

who took his flirt and flew the coop.

And the music industry mafia is pimping girl power

sniping off sharpshooter singles from their styrofoam towers

and hip hop is tied up in the back room

with a logo stuffed in it's mouth

cuz the master's tools will never dismantle the master's house

but then

I'm getting away from myself

as I get closer and closer to home

and the difference between

you and me baby

is I get fucked up when I'm alone.

And I must admit

today my inner pessimist

seems to have got the best of me

we start out sugared up on Kool-Aid and manifest destiny

and we memorize all the president's names

like little trained monkeys

and then we're spit into the world

so many spinny-eyed t.v. junkies

incapable of unravelling the military industrial mystery

preemptively pacified with history book history

and I've been around the world now

and I can see this about America:

the mind control is steep here, man

the myopia is deep here.

And behold

those that try to expose the reality

who really try to realize democracy

are shot with rubber bullets and gassed off the streets

while the global power brokers are kept clean and discreet

behind a wall

and that is all

that's all she wrote.

And my heart beats an S.O.S.

cuz folks just really couldn't care less

as long as everyday is Superbowl sunday

and larger than life women in lingerie

are pouting at us from every bus stop

shelovesme shelovesmenot...

"Big goverment should not stand between a man and his money"

"What's good for business is good for the country"

Our children still take that lie like communion

the same old line the confederacy used on the union

conjugate liberty

into libertarian

associate it

with deregulation

privatization

we won't even know we're slaves

on a corporate plantation

somebody say hallelujah!

somebody say damnation!

cuz the profit system follows the path of least resistance

and the path of least resistance

is what makes the river crooked

makes it serpentine

capitalism is the devil's wet dream

so just give me my Judy Garland drugs

and let me get back to work

cuz the Empire State building

is the tallest building in New York.

Is This Guy For Real??

O.K., I was really trying to save my coupon for "One free bitch slap" for a rainy day, but Georgie had to go & open his mouth again! So I must redeem it now...

In a press conference, Bush suggested that US troops will be in Iraq at least until 2009, & said he would only withdraw them if the situation appeared hopeless.

Somebody needs to pull this boy's head outta his ass!

Bush said, " There's going to be more tough fighting ahead, the Iraqis took a look and decided not to go to civil war."

Oh did they? Does this idiot ever pick up a newspaper or turn on the news, other than Faux?

He added, " I'm optimistic--we'll succeed. If not, I'd pull our troops out. If I didn't believe we had a plan for victory, I wouldn't leave our people in harm's way. I wouldn't put those kids there."

Hmmmm. Considering there is no, or ever was a "plan for victory", & the violence & devastation in Iraq is increasing, not decreasing.....then it's time to PULL OUR TROOPS OUT YOU PRICK!

I have a sneaky suspicion I'm going to need to stock up on more 'free bitch slap' coupons. Bush is on a roll.

White House Pushes Schools To Drug Test Students

MMMKAY!

Students could be increasingly subjected to random drug testing under a new program promoted by the Bush administration. White House officials say drug testing is an effective way to keep students away from harmful substances like mary-j-wanna & crystal meth.

Some parents, educators, & school officials call it a heavy handed, ineffective way to discourage drug use that undermines trust & invades students rights.

Jennifer Kern, a research associate at the Drug Policy Alliance says, " Our money should be going toward educating young people, not putting them under these surveillance programs."

Requiring students to produce a urine sample or hair sample for lab testing is a relatively recent tactic in the United States' decades long "war on drugs", along with surveillance cameras & drug sniffing dogs in school hallways.

The Bush administration has spent $8 million to help schools pay for drug testing programs. The White House hopes to spend $15 million on drug testing grants in the next fiscal year.

White House officials liken drug testing to programs that screen for tuberculosis or other diseases, & said students who test positive will not face criminal charges.

Hahahahaha! Yeah, right! But I'm sure they will be kicked out of school. I can think of about a million other ways the White House can spend it's money. Can you?

A 2003 national survey of 76,000 students found no difference in drug use between schools that test students & those that don't.

Case rested.

Quote Of The Day

" We cannot let terrorists hold this nation hostile, or hold our allies hostile."--George W. Bush, (2000, Des Moines, Iowa)

" Doh ! "

Bush Caught In Lie, Again!

At his Cleveland speech made on the 3rd Anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, Bush was true to form! Caught in yet another full-o-shit lie when asked about the 3 reasons he gave for initially going into Iraq--1.) WMD 2.) Claim Iraq sponsored terrorists that attacked us on 9/11 3.) Iraq purchased nuclear materials from Niger. Bush's response???

Bush: " First--just if I might correct a misperception, I dont think we ever said, at least I know I didnt say that there was a direct connection between September 11th and Saddam Hussein." "I was very careful never to say that Saddam Hussein ordered the attacks on America."

Oh, poor thing is delusional! Here's the quote he said, on air, 3 years ago. January 28th 2003:

Bush: " Saddam Hussein aids and protects terrorists, including members of al-Qaeda."

" Lies, lies, lies, yeah"

Department of Homeland Security Detain Suspicious Cat

Mentally Ill Troops Headed Back To Iraq

Military personnel nationwide are heading back to Iraq, and many will be bringing with them a cache of antidepressant and anti-anxiety medications.
Mentally ill service men and women are being returned to combat, and the redeployments are legal. But veteran groups, lawmakers, and mental health professionals fear that the practice lacks adequate civilian oversight. They also fear that these redeployments are becoming more frequent as soldiers are being recycled and multiple combat tours become the norm. Traumatized service members are retained out of loyalty or wartime pressures to maintain troop numbers.
Senator Barbara Boxer hopes to address the controversy through the Department of Defense Task Force on Mental Health, which is expected to start next month.
Boxer said, " We've also heard reports that doctors are being encouraged not to identify mental health illness in our troops. If people are suffering from mental health problems, they should not be sent on the battlefield."
" Stress reduces a person's chances of functioning well in combat", says Frank M. Ochberg, a psychiatrist for 40 years.
Officials from the Defense Department and Camp Pendleton here in California, where some units have been to Iraq 3 times, said they dont track personnel deployed while taking mental health medications or the number diagnosed with mental illness.
But medical officers for the Army and Marine Corps acknowledge that medicated service members-and those suffering combat- induced psychological problems- are returning to war. And anecdotal evidence, bolstered by the goverment's own studies, suggest that the number could be significant.
A 2004 Army report found that up to 17% of combat-seasoned infantrymen experienced major depression, anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder after one combat tour in Iraq. Less than 40% of them had sought mental-health care.
A Penagon survey released last month found that 35% of the troops returing home from Iraq had received psychological counceling during their first year home.
33% of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans suffer from schizophrenia, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.
More than 200,000 prescriptions for the most common types of antidepressants were written in the past 14 months for service members and their families.
Army doctors are being told to diagnose combat-stress reaction instead of post-traumatic stress disorder. This does 2 things: it keeps the troops deployable and it makes it hard for them to collect disability claims once they get out of the military.
This is truly scary. It is obvious to me, and I'm sure to you, that mentally ill military men and women should NOT be allowed back into combat. They are a risk and liability, not too mention the increasing trauma and mental strain these soldiers will recieve while in combat. When these poor servicemen and women come back home, they will truly be damaged goods. And that trickles back down into society as a whole.

Joint Terrorism Task Force Questions California Professor

Dr. Miguel Tinker Salas, Arango Professor in Latin American History and Professor of History and Chicano Studies at Pomona College in Claremont, California was paid a little visit by our friends at the Los Angeles FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF).
Dr. Salas is considered am expert on Venezuela, politics, oil and culture, and is well informed on the U.S. presence in Venezuela. He is also an expert authority on US/Mexico border culture and Latin American Immigration. Dr. Salas is the author of, " The Venezuelan Exceptionalism Thesis: Seperating Myth from Reality" (2005), and "Under the Shadow of the Eagles, The Border and the Transformation of Sonora During the Porfiriato" (1997).
The following is an excerpt from a letter written by Dr. Salas:
" I write to inform you that yesterday (March 7th,2006) during my office hours (Tues 2:30-4:30) I was visited by two agents of the L.A. County Sheriff's/FBI Joint Task Force on Terrorism (JTTF). They arrived at about 2:40-2:45 pm, sat outside my office while I attended to students, and then asked to see me. They had with them a copy of my profile from the college Web page, and other materials I could not see.
After identifying themselves, they proceeded to ask about my relation to Venezuela, the goverment, the community, my scholarship, my politics. They were especially interested in whether or not I had been approached by anyone in the Venezuelan goverment or embassy to speak up on Venezuelan related matters. In addition, they raised a whole host of other troubling questions, too long to summerize here.
They also indicated that the visit to my office was part of a larger effort to interview academics in the area. I do not know if this is happening at other schools.
After they departed, the three or four students who were outside my office informed me that these individuals has asked about my background, my classes, what I taught, my politics, and they even wrote down the cartoons that are on my door. I consider this to be an attempt at intimidation and cast a pall on matters of academic freedom."

Dr.Salas is not a terrorist. Nor does he have any ties to terrorists or to terrorism. Yet the JTTF questions him at his place of business, and the students he teaches. It is obvious to me that the goverment is trying to identify any domestic opposition against US military offensives in foreign countries, like Iraq or in the future, Venezuela. They are afraid. They're afraid that someone with as much knowledge as Dr. Salas will teach or influence his students against the US goverment. They are afraid that professors across this country will actually teach TRUE history to their students, which includes the horrible, and disgusting treatment the US has been engaging in against foreign countries for years now. This is the ultimate proof that this goverment will supress and censor what the citizens and students of this country will learn about the real truth, the ugly truth that is. And although it may be ugly, it is still history, and it is still fact.
Wake up people! Can't you see what is being done here? A slow, yet progressive movement toward a total police state which will rape us all of the freedoms and rights we were so used to. All in the name of ' Fighting Terrorism'.

Article From Austria's 'Die Presse"

This article is from Austria's Die Presse, the original article is in German, here is the translated version. It speaks volumes about how Bush & the GOP party's pirate ship is sinking, but the Democrats are nowhere to be found, abandoning their chance to steal back the booty. As we here in the U.S. are scratching our heads about this, so are Europeans. Now is the perfect time to take back OUR country, now is the perfect time for revolution.

Published March 14th, 2006

" It's a few days short of the third anniversary of the beginning of the war in Iraq. For President George W. Bush this is an opprotunity to begin a broad campaign to unify Americans behind his Iraq policy. In several speeches per week, Bush will discuss "Progress in Iraq", and "lessons learned" there, as he has before. Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, and other administration officials will add their voices to the hymn of praise on their behalf.

The response from the American public is the question, for along with the happy chirping about supposed progress and lessons learned, the sound of sour notes ring loudly. As Iraq apparently stands on the brink of civil war, U.S. experts publish one devastating study on the administration's policy after another, sketching a gloomy scenario for the upcoming months and years.

In the meantime Bush appeals to the people: things are going well, but we have to be patient; Washington is doing everything possible to prevent a civil war; there is still hard fighting ahead, but the U.S. strategy will result in victory. This is the message of the President, which has already been given many times and will be given many times more. The constant repetition will not, however, make the message any more credible; the quantity of the talk will deceive no one of the poor quality of his Iraq policy.

Today there are about 132,000 U.S. soldiers stationed in Iraq, and more than 2,300 have been killed since the invasion three years ago. With the growing toll of victims has grown the opposition to the war: 59% of Americans reject Bush's Iraq policy, and only 37% approve of the President's overall performance in office. It will be no easy task to reverse his decline in public opinion.

Worst of all for Bush is his loss of popularity in his own party. As more and more Republican politicians have distanced themselves from "their" president, his approval rating among the members of Grand Old Party (the GOP) has sunk from 82% to 74%. In the controversy over the takeover (management, actually) of important U.S. ports by a company from the United Arab Emirates, the Republican-dominated Congress denied Bush their support.

Last weekend, at a meeting of Republican Party activists with presidential ambitions, it was clear that even though loyalty to Bush was stressed, the party was focusing on the period after his administration. It's not that long to the 2008 elections, which Bush cannot contest. Current spending policies were criticized, as well as the lack of fiscal responsibility and the turn away from socially-conservative values. Many grumbled that it's time to return to true conservative politics.

And the Democrats? It's significant that they don't make their first apperance until late in this article. For they have failed to make political capital or score with voters, despite Bush's unpopularity, Guantanamo, the failure after Katrina, corruption and the differences among Republicans. Dramatic though it would be, threatening a --quite unlikely--a process of impeachment would profit them little.

The party seems to be in disarray, without plans or organization. The presentation of a platform has been postponed for months. Nor is it clear if the strategy of the Democrats will be based on an anti-George W. Bush campaign, it's own program of reform, or if it will focus on national or local issues.

The elections are fast approaching. In Novemember, all 435 seats of the House of Reps will be contested, as well as 33 of 100 Senate seats and 36 Republicans could loose their majority among governers. But the Democrats dream of regaining majoritites in both houses of Congress cannot be realized unless they successfully engage important themes and display leadership.

"We have one party with bad ideas and another party with no ideas" acidly notes an American comedian. If that's true, George W. Bush can relax without worry."

V For Vendetta Review

This movie was amazing! All you fellow 'dissenters' have to go see it!
'V' is based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore. It follows the transformation of Evey (Natalie Portman) from an assistant at a goverment sanctioned t.v. station (yeah, like Faux News!) to political activist.
Evey heads outside one night after the goverment controlled curfew, cornered by undercover police/goverment agents who take advantage of her vulnerablity by nearly raping her, V, the mysterious masked man & all his crazy sword-wielding, saves Evey by completely annihilating the pigs.
V takes Evey to a rooftop where she's given a front row seat as V blows up the Old Bailey building in an act of defiance set up to trigger a reaction from London's people.
The destruction of the Old Bailey takes place on the anniversary of the day vigilante Guy Fawkes tried to blow up Parliament in 1605. V vows that on the next anniversary of Guy Fawkes Day he will blow up Parliament. This begins his campaign to get London citizens into action against their totalitarian goverment.
The movie was delayed from it's scheduled Nov. 2005 release, some say to show respect for the London bombing victims, especially due to the last scene in the movie, which I will spare the spoiler for ya!
The movie is also getting flack for being "sympathetic to terrorists". But as some say, One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. And to me, V was a freedom fighter.
The movie touches on such issues as the right to free speech, religious freedom, terrorism, & homosexuality, the latter being a particularly touching part of the film that just about caused Sappho to shed a tear!
You will walk out of the theatre with chills, thinking about it's closly related subject matter to the current situation here in the U.S., & what it could become if left unchecked.
The goverment imposes curfews, sanctioned television, bans music, & bans the Koran ( see what happens to one character for owning one hidden in their house in a glass display case due to the rareness of it!).
You must see this film! You will not be disappointed! Viva la Revolution!

" People should not be afraid of their goverments, goverments should be afraid of their people." (V)

"Fear became the ultimate tool for this goverment." (V)

Nostradamus Predicted Years 2006-2012, "Time of Trouble"

In the book, " The Nostradamus Code- World War 3, 2006-2012" the years 2006-2012 are explained in precise detail, & are referred to by Nostradamus as the "Time of Trouble".
The book talks of Nostradamus' predictions of Middle East war, assassinations, nuclear bombs, earth changes, the death of a world leader in the Middle East, & U.S. Electoral College fiasco.
I don't know if I believe all this, but it is fascinating to read. I'll let you be the judge...

"Crazed Leader Launches Nuclear Bombs On Mediterranean & Europe":

*** " During continuing unrest in the Middle East, one of the leaders will be able to get hold of a nuclear bomb. He will go to the greatest lengths over the smallest things and will not hesitate to use the weapon because his obsessions with deadly warfare. The people he is warring against retaliate with a nuclear weapon. The country has a coast on the Mediterranean.

" The nuclear weapon being dropped by one of the Middle Eastern countries will spark off yet another war on top of that war. European and Western nations will try to interfere to diminish the threat to oil supplies. When the European countries try to interfere, the crazed leader who earlier dropped the nuclear bomb will use the rest of his arsenal on Europe, most striking the closer southern part."

"Volcanoes, Earthquakes, Floods, Droughts, Famines, Rioting":

*** " A very bright, previously unknown comet will appear and coincide with the time of great geological troubles, with earthquakes and volcanoes erupting and disrupting weather systems."

" As a result of the disruption to local goverments by the natural disasters, the Antichrist will move his troops in under the disguise of helping the people restore civil order, but really use this as a device to take over countries, and to use the populations like slaves."

" Serious economic problems will persist along with great social unrest, contributing to the ease with which the Antichrist can seize power. The frightened and hopeful populace will be vulnerable to his demagoguery. The Antichrist will use the disasters as opprotunities to overthrow goverments and sneak spies into a country. Martial law will be declared in many areas to stop rioting, and looting."

"Fiasco From Communication Breakdown Between 2 Superpowers":

*** " Through a mistake by a leader an international incident will occur. The main problem will be a breakdown in communication between the two superpowers involved."

" The situation develops when an enemy or one who is against the U.S. will take advantage of the incident in an unethical way, by sending a horde of agents working for their side into this area. The world will be outraged by the action."

" A breakdown in communications between the U.S. and Russia will result in a misunderstanding and deep resentments between the Kremlin and the White House."

" Death Of World Leader & Revolt Coincides With Comet":

*** " The death of a world leader will coincide with the appearance of a comet. The comet will be clearly visable where the leader dies. The country is in the Middle East."

" Russian/American Submarine/Naval Confrontation":

*** " The event will lead to the time of troubles and will have large historical signifigance when seen in retrospect."

" Third World Country Leader Creates Strife":

*** " A "young dark man" will arise as a leader in a Third World country; his main goal is to unite the other Third World countries to do battle with the superpowers. The area of conflict will be in Eastern Europe and the Middle East."

" American Electoral College Voting Stalemate":

*** " The president's of the U.S., a supposedly free country, have been abusing their power to an increasingly greater extent. During a time of social unrest even more so than the period of Vietnam and Watergate, the Electoral College will be evenly split over the election of the new president. The process will stalemate, with many people clamoring for whichever candidate they voted for, causing enormous tension in the country. Internationally it will be a sensitive subject."

" Because of the split, and the extremely volitile and expolsive social unrest, putting either candidate inoffice instead of the other one could start a civil war or a revolution. After a long time of impassioned speeches invoking patriotism and the founding fathers, a compromise solution of holding another election will be taken, and a candidate will be installed without disaster."

FBI Spies On U.S. Peace Group

FBI anti-terrorism agents spied on a U.S. peace group simply because it opposed the Iraq war. This all part of an "unprecedented campaign" to spy on innocent citizens, the American Civil Liberties Union said.
FBI documents acquired under the Freedom of Information Act & given to reporters show that the FBI conducted surveillance of the Pittsburgh based Thomas Merton Center for Peace & Justice at anti-war demonstrations & leaflet distributions in 2002 & 2003.
FBI documents which were shown at a news conference by the 2 groups had the headline, " International Terrorism Matters", & referred to the FBI's work with an anti-terrorism task force that includes several agencies.
Another of the FBI documents said the Pittsburgh Joint Terrorism Task Force had learned that " The Thomas Merton Center...has been determined to be an organization which is opposed to the United States war with Iraq."
A seperate document noted, " One female leaflet distributer who appeared to be of Middle Eastern descent, inquired (name withheld) was an FBI agent. No other TMC participants appeared to be of Middle Eastern descent."
FBI officials said they were engaged in legitimate investigations, & in one case admitted that a person photographed at one demonstration was not whom they were looking for. "We had a legitimate purpose for being there", FBI special agent Bill Crowley said.
In an FBI memo, it called the Merton Center, "a left-wing organization advocating, among many political causes, pacifism."
The FBI said it was pursuing leads from another source possibly establishing a link between the 2, & finding no such link, terminated the surveillance.
I think these FBI guys finally realized they were wasting their time & our taxpayer dollars on a bunch of "hippies" protesting war. I mean, the title of the organization alone should have told them something, 'Thomas Merton Center for Peace & Justice'!
It's really sad for this country that organizations & American citizens can't protest or disagree with war without being " investigated", "photographed", "followed", etc. Isn't that what this country was founded on? Freedom of speech & expression. Freedom to disagree with anyone, including the goverment or the president, without being punished or harassed for it.
I think it's so ironic that the people calling for peace & love & no war are the targets of FBI "surveillance". Talk about ass-backwards!

Sandra Day O'Connor Warns U.S. Is In Danger Of Dictatorship

In a speech at Georgetown University, which was reported by NPR & the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin, Sandra Day O'Connor took aim at Republican leaders whose repeated threats of the courts for alleged liberal bias could, she said, be contributing to a climate of violence against judges.
O'Connor is sadly missed after retiring from the Supreme Court last month after 24 years on the bench. Making way for the 2 anti-abortion judges, Alito & Roberts.
She declared, " We must be ever vigilant against those who would strong-arm the judiciary."
She pointed autocracies in the developing world & former Communist countries as lessons on where interference with the judiciary might lead. Adding, "It takes alot of degeneration before a country falls into dictatorship, but we should avoid these ends by avoiding these beginnings."
O'Connor also responded to Tom Delay's actions over the Terry Schiavo case, in which he called for the impeachment of judges involved in that case, & called for more scrutiny of " an arrogant, out of control, unaccountable judiciary that thumbed their noses at Congress and the President."
O'Connor said such threats " pose a threat to our constitutional freedom", & she told lawyers in the audience, " I want you to tune your ears to these attacks...You have a obligation to speak up. Statutes and constitutions do not protect judicial independence--people do."
As a woman who served on the Supreme Court for 24 years & has watched the current administrations rigging of the Court, etc, we need to take her warnings to heart. She is an intelligent, open-minded woman who will be sorely missed by many, especially women, at this very critical time when a woman's right to choose is being threatend.

V For Vendetta

V for Vendetta opens March 17th. I can't wait to see this movie. Looks like a modern day '1984'. Will post a review after opening.

Chile Elects 1st Woman President

On March 11th, Michelle Bachelet, a Socialist, was inaugurated as Chile's first female president. Bachelet is a pediatrician & surgeon with studies in military strategy. She served as Health Minister & Defense Minister under President Ricardo Lagos. She is a single mother of 3 kids, & a self-described agnostic. I love her already!
Bachelet's father was a constitutional General under Allende, & died during his torture back when in 1973 there was a violent military takeover of the then Socialist President Allende.
What's even more amazing is Bachelet was taken prisoner then as well. Stories of how she used her medical training to organize & care for as many prisoners as she could are not only true, but heroic.
During the inauguration ceremony the camera spotlighted a variety of world leaders attending the ceremonies. Cheers broke out for Brazil's President Lula, newly elected Bolivian President Morales & Venezuelan's Chavez. When the camera focused on the official U.S. representative, Secretary of State Condi Rice, the crowd booed!
Congrats Chile! Now where's OUR Michelle Bachelet????

Is Big Brother Watching You At Work?

Your boss may be keeping a closer eye on you than you think! Employer surveillance of workers & property extends beyond the video screen. Your boss can now tell what Web sites you've visited on the office computers, the content of e-mail you haven't even sent yet, even your every move through cell phones equipped with GPS. And coming soon, employee identification through biometrics--measuring such biological components such as fingerprints & voice patterns.
This all leads to the unsuspecting employee to ask: What privacy rights do I have when it comes to electronic monitoring?? L. Camille Hebert, a law professor at Ohio State University & author of "Employee Privacy Law", says not very much!
Due to the computers being the property of the employers, they have the legal right to monitor e-mail & internet activity.
Such surveillance is on the rise because bosses can cite significant reasons for tracking worker activity, like monitoring can cut down on sexual harassment, workplace accidents, & goofing off. Plus, in lawsuits, courts expect employers to be able to hand over electronic evidence.
The use of video monitoring for theft, violence, & sabotage rose last year to 51% of 526 employers surveyed by the American Management Ass. & ePolicy Institute.
Keep this in mind people, they are watching, & nowadays what you read, look up on the internet, or e-mail can cause some ignorant jerk to report your ass to the '1984 Squad', AKA: the goverment.
Here are some interesting statisitics of employers monitoring employees in the following ways:

***Monitoring & reviewing Web sites visited: 76%

***Storing & reviewing e-mail messages: 55%

***Using smart-card technology to control building/data access: 53%

***Monitor time spent on phone & numbers called: 51%

***Using video surveillance to counter theft, violence, sabotage: 51%

***Saving & reviewing employee's computer files: 50%

***Monitoring time employee's spend on computer, content, keystrokes entered: 36%

***Taping employee phone conversations: 22%

***Using video surveillance to monitor performance: 16%

***Taping & reviewing voice mail messages: 15%

***Using GPS to monitor/track employee ID/smart cards: 8%

***Using fingerprint scans to control building/data access: 5%

***Using GPS to monitor/track cell phones: 5%

***Using iris scan technology to control building access: 0.5%

PATHETIC

I was about to feel sorry for Georgie, but then I remembered what an asshole he is! Looks as if Bush's approval ratings are circling the porcelain throne faster than we can keep up with!
The current approval rating is a whopping 34%!!!!
The CBS Poll also asked :
**Will the U.S. succeed in Iraq?= 47% Not very/not at all likely
**Will Iraq become a stable democracy?= 54% No, never
**If it does, will the U.S. become safer?= More safe from terrorism=28%, Less safe= 5%, Won't make any difference= 64%

British Companies Make Fortune From Iraq

British businesses have profited by at least $1.1 m pounds since the Iraq invasion 3 years ago, the 1st comprehensive investigation into UK corporate investments in Iraq has found.
The company's roll-call of post-war profiteers include some of the best known names in Britian's boardrooms, as well as many who would prefer to remain anonymous. They include private security firms, banks, PR consultancies, urban planning consortiums, oil companies, architects & energy advisory boards.
One of the top profiteers is the construction firm Amec, which made an estimated $500 m pounds from a series of contracts restoring electrical systems & maintaining power generation facilities during the past 2 years. Aegis, which provides private security has earned more than $ 246 m pounds from a 3 year contract with the Pentagon to co-ordinate military & security companies in Iraq.
These findings show how much is at stake if Britain were to withdraw it's military from Iraq. Iraq will be forced to rely on British buisness for many years to come.
A total of 61 British companies are identified as benefiting from at least $ 1.1 b pounds of contracts & investments in Iraq. Corporate Watch believes this number could be as much as 5 times higher, due to many companies prefering to keep their relationships secret. The goverment is refusing to release the names of companies it has helped to win contracts in Iraq.
Many of the companies enjoy long-standing relationships with the Labour party & now have a financial stake to win contracts in Iraq.
Hmmmm, sound familiar?? More disgusting war profiteering from the goverments (US/UK) who orchestrated the invasion of Iraq for oil, money, & large, lucrative business contracts. The world should be outraged that these goverments are profiting off of the lives of the fallen US/UK soldiers, as well as the Iraqi people. The proof is in the pudding.
Top 10 Firms Profiting From Iraq (UK):

1.) AMEC= $500 m pounds. Global management company specialising in the oil & gas engineering sectors.

2.) Aegis= $ 246.5 m pounds. Oversee's all private security operations.

3.) Erinys= $ 86 m pounds. Specialises in security for the petroleum, construction & mining industries.

4.) Petrel Resources= $ 56.6 m pounds. Oil & gas exploration company, seeking licences to run 3 exisiting oil wells in Iraq.

5.) HSBC= $ 36.88 m pounds. 3rd largest financial institution in the world. Has bought 70% of recently established Iraqi bank.

6.) Cummins UK= $ 25.8 m pounds. World's largest manufacturer of diesel engines.

7.) PB Power= $ 24.88 m pounds. Global engineering & construction firm.

8.) Control Risks= $ 23.5 m pounds. Risk consultancy business, provides govermental & corporate clients with security management, discreet armed protection, & info support.

9.) Merchant Bridge= $ 22.07 m pounds. Investment banking group focusing on telecommunications, real estate, construction, financial services, info technology & hotels in Iraq.

10.) Global Risk Strategies= $ 15.4 m pounds. Risk management company, advises on corporate security & counter-terrorism strategies.
